SENSE OF PLACE IN DEVELOPMENTAL CONTEXT
Robert Hay

They say…..
The development of a sense of place is particularly influenced by residential status.

I say…..
One can develop a place attachment by factors such as rootedness and length of residence.

Hay(1998) points out that the place attachment comes from the place you are a citizen of, the place you belong to legally.

I feel that one develops a place attachment from the culture in which one is living. One can develop place identity from the duration of one's stay there and how fast one can make that place his own.

  1. Saurabh, this is a great start to adding your voice to an existing academic conversation. In thinking about the audience for the blog (who do we want it to be directed toward?) I wonder what additions could be made to make it more relevant to the audience? Should the audience extend beyond the members of the class, or is this just a way we can all brainstorm together? We haven't discussed these questions much lately, so I thought I'd inquire about what audience you have in mind.

I'm also curious what these different factors mean -- what is "residential status"? Also, what is "rootedness"? Is that developed from other research? Hay's research? What do you have in mind?
