I kind of lost the track of time. I think I’ve been on the plane forever as it was always dark, but it turned out to be only 12 hours. But the genuine truth is that my plane took off at 9:00 AM 25th in Beijing, and it landed at 10:00 AM 25th in New York. So technically people back home have already spent a day while I, one hour.
I called my parents and had some snacks and then the adventure began as I walked up the plane at Laguardia Airport, the four year adventure for me at University of Rochester.
It’s a 50-minute flight, but I was so excited that I kept checking my watch to see how much time remaining. About 40 hours later, at least that’s how I felt, the broadcast finally spoke out the landing message. Opening the sunshade, a blossom of bright sunshine came in, and all I could see were packs of little houses surrounded by pine trees, lots of rivers as if the odds and ends of wool, waterfalls, and sports fields… And as the trees became more and more vivid, and I could even figure out the types of vans running on roads, and then BOOM, we landed.
Now I’m officially on Rochester land and the feeling of excitement keeps piling up. Now I get to visit the campus, meet some of my future classmates who are also international students, and go explore everything.
Maybe I should feel really nervous or nostalgic. However, all I’m feeling is excitement. It’s exploration, adventure, and a fresh start that waves at me.
Kailin,
ReplyDeleteI really love the way you begin this story! I like the different ways in which you discuss the concept of time as time felt versus time lapsed versus different time zones. I also really like the language you use to describe these experiences; especially that of having exploration, adventure, and a fresh start that "wave" at you. As a reader, I found the use of "BOOM" in all capital letters to be an interesting choice. What did you want to emphasize with this? The suddenness? A rough landing? Something else perhaps?
I hope you are enjoying this new adventure here at Rochester!
I agree about time! It very much makes me think of the special relativity Prezi we were watching today :)
DeleteYes, I wanted to emphasize the suddenness of landing when I was wondering about my life as I was looking out of the window. Thanks for your comment!
